*Director’s Statement by Nathan Hewitt*
"reTribution" is a highly personal film for me for a number of reasons. I wanted to explore a dysfunctional family of siblings from rough circumstances whose greed and personal vendettas puts one of them at risk, and their fight to make it out alive when forces come into play that they didn't expect.
I grew up running around very rough, low income parts of Omaha, and this definitely influenced the overall gritty aesthetic of "reTribution." We shot about 85% of the story on 35 mm film primarily for this reason.
Years ago, I had a number of jarring experiences with a cult-like group using emotional shock as a control tactic. One of my brothers also became involved, and, while I can't get into specifics, I carry trauma with me from that time until now. Some aspects of the piece are definitely influenced by those events, and a majority of the characters are loosely based on real people from my life.
As a director, I'm always fascinated by high intensity sequences of Neo-Noir films, as well as colorful characters and pallets. With "reTribution", we tried to push the boundaries of the action-thriller genre with a storytelling style that takes the audience on a wild and violent ride.
Hope you enjoy!
Sincerely,
-N
