Demon's in the Dark was made almost by accident. We had just received funding for 'The Evil In Us', a feature film that I had written, but still had not been given the green light to direct. Before I was entrusted to helm the feature, my partners and investors first needed to see if I could direct a short. Specifically they wanted to see if I could shoot 7 or 8 pages a day, which would be necessary to finish the feature on time and budget. So I wrote the script for Demon's In the Dark over the course of about 3 days while sitting in my car guarding a parking lot while working as a Production Assistant for a big TV pilot. Incidentally the TV pilot cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 million dollars to make and was never picked up. If you're an indie filmmaker you can appreciate the hair pulling anxiety caused by the failed pilot scenario...which happens all too often. If only they could have given me a fraction of that money before they burned it right? I guess the good news is it was kind of like getting paid to write the script. It was PA's wages, but still better than nothing. But I digress. With Demon's, I wanted to write something that showcased a strong female lead, almost like a super hero, but still in the horror genre. I chose the feminist vigilante prostitute angle, because it was like a dichotomy completely at odds with itself. On one side you have a prostitute, the epitome of objectification of women and on the other, a psychotic superhero that tortures and mutilates Johns that disrespect her. For me, Demon's in the Dark has more of a personal side as well. Having worked in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, I have always been fascinated, yet saddened by the plight of many people down there, especially the prostitutes. Every one of them came from somewhere, had or has a family and a story, but most will never be heard. I like to think that in some strange way, this story gives a voice to those women who have been abused and cast aside. I hope people enjoy Demon's In the Dark because I truly loved every second in making it. I would also like to thank the actors, crew and my partners for making this film with me. It really takes a team to make a movie possible. Read less
