Martijn Smits (1975) graduated in Directing in 2002 at the Dutch High school of Arts. He started out as an assistant-director on Dutch feature films. Martijn Smits (1975) graduated in Directing in 2002 at the Dutch High school of Arts. He started out as an assistant-director on Dutch feature films. He directed 2 award winning short features: 'the Bug' (2007) which earned him a Silver Melies nomination and 'Brother's keeper' (2008) which won first place at the NBC Universal Shocking Shorts Awards. He directed his first feature film 'Zombibi' aka 'Kill Zombie'' in 2011. Zombibi was the first Dutch zombie comedy, with a worldwide release in 2012. In 2013 Martijn co-wrote and directed the comedy cop show 'Popoz' for Comedy Central. This first season of six episodes was a huge success and the show was also aired in Germany, Belgium, Poland and Sweden. Season 2 aired in 2014 and in 2015 'Popoz-the movie' was released in cinemas. This big scale action comedy received a Golden Film Award for selling more than 100.000 tickets and was selected for Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. In 2017 Martijn directed 14 episodes of the adventure series 'De Ludwigs' aka 'Hunter Street' for Nickelodeon. In 2018 his third feature film, the first Dutch superhero film: 'Superjuffie! aka 'Super Miss'' was released. The film was a box office smash with almost 300.000 tickets sold. Superjuffie is the most successful Dutch family film of the last two years. The sequel, also directed by Martijn, will arrive in Dutch cinemas in December 2020. In 2019 Martijn directed the family film 'Mees Kees in de wolken', a huge success in cinemas during the Christmas holidays. Within two weeks it received a Golden Film Award for selling more than 100.000 tickets.
