Morana
Synopsis
On Ash Wednesday in a traditional Czech village, Mathilde, a nihilistic teenager reeling from her mother’s death is cursed by her younger sister to encounter Morana, the Pagan goddess of death and winter. Mathilde is faced with a choice, to accept her grief and rejoin the ranks of the living or to embrace the darkness within.

Michal and Ariel are a Czech-Mexican team of writer-directors who envision their projects continuous with magical realism and 20th century European cinema. They began their collaboration in Cambridge's Writing For Performance Master's program and currently work in the intersection of film and theatre. Their previous short film, 'MEOW!' (2024) won best experimental film at Mcminnville short film festival, an honourable mention at LOCO London, and screened at Leiden Shorts, and Norwich Film Festival. Their top 25 Straight8 short, 'love bites' screened at Dead Center Film Festival, Cambridge Film Festival, and London Short Film Festival.
Their latest play ‘L’indiscipline’ (2025,2026) has been staged in London, Prague, Paris, and Avignon.
Ariel was born in Mexico and currently lives in London where he studied maths and philosophy. He is interested in using the different mediums he works in to explore ideas, always with light and dark.
Michal is a Czech writer and filmmaker from Prague working across film, theatre, music, literature, and comic books. His work is drawn to the strange, playful, and poetic, and to the ways different forms of storytelling can come together.
